The book World War Z is an Objective Fantasy book that looks from an objective stand point of each culture around the world and how they would be affected and how they would respond to the Zombie apocalypse. It takes place first in a small town in China that requested the help of a physician. Upon arrival the veteran doctor of many wars was already disconcerted by the behavior of the town’s people. After entering the building this went from odd to undead in the small rural town of “New Dachang”. “Patient Zero”-a small Chinese boy-was locked behind a door of an abandoned house, “They warned me not to touch him, that he was a “cursed.” I shrugged them and reached for my mask and gloves. The boy’s skin was as cold and gray as the cement on which he lay.”(7) the boy was not cursed but was rather infected by the zombie virus that was soon to plague every culture in different ways.
A large part of the book is the interviews with people all around the world about their experiences with the Zombie war; how they survived how they coped and how they manage to use their skills to live through the situation. This book is not so much a fantasy as much as it is educational. This book goes places that not many other books do. It makes up believable stories of people dealing with the undead pandemic and tells you the reader how they survived and the conditions in which they were before hand and during the attack. I’d greatly recommend this book to anyone looking for an interesting read that covers a very interesting mythological topic.
World War Z has many reviews from many publications but one that stuck out very boldly was from the Hartford Courant stating, “Brooks [is] America’s most prominent maven on the living dead…gripping reading.” Max Brooks IS in fact a maven. With little cost to the public he is spreading his vast knowledge and a very rarely know topic and is keeping the topic alive through publications like books. Though made up they are still very accurate as to how one would actually think a zombie would behave in a real world environment.
